The dentist can create anxiety for many people, making it almost impossible to sit still in a chair for the duration of even a general check-up. For those who suffer from this fear, there’s plenty of options to put your mind at ease. At Greenspoint Dental, we offer sedation dentistry: a technique used to “sedate” a patient while being examined or operated on. This allows a patient to feel numb and to relax when they would otherwise be worrisome or anxious. These procedures are safe and help calm and soothe patient while allowing dentists to still provide oral care necessary for a healthy smile. We offer a variety of sedation options for different patients and procedures.
- Nitrous Oxide/Laughing Gas: This works best for mild to moderate anxiety and allows the patient to be awake during the procedure, but very relaxed and calm. This form of sedation has a rapid onset and involves the patient breathing in nitrous oxide gas before performing any dentistry. Any appointment length can be accompanied by this sedation and it can quickly be adjusted to allow for more or longer sedation.
- Oral Sedation: This sedation is given in the form of a pill and allows the patient to feel as if they fell asleep. the body still functions and is able to breathe on its own. You’ll retain only some memory of the procedure if any, and this sedation is easy to monitor.
- IV Sedation: IV sedation allows the sedation medicine to be inserted directly into the bloodstream. This causes the patient to feel as if they slept through the procedure and rarely is there any memory of the procedure.
