Toothaches, Cavities, Crowns & Root Canals
If your tooth hurts, one reason for your tooth pain may be neglected cavities, which are also known as dental caries. Cavities are caused by acids in plaque that erode and decay the tooth enamel. Sometimes caries manifest as gray spots in the teeth and other times, they are not visible by the naked eye. X-rays may show cavities forming inside the tooth. Consuming a lot of sugary foods and starchy foods may increase your risk of developing dental caries.
If you have a cavity, Dr. Bosse will remove the tooth decay and replace it with a filling material to match the natural appearance of your tooth color. This way, it blends in with the rest of your teeth. Depending on the extent the tooth infection, patients may need a crown or a root canal. If the tooth decay has significantly weakened the top structure of the tooth, the dentist will fit a cap or crown over your tooth. This helps strengthen the tooth’s structure. If the tooth infection causes the tooth’s nerve to die, the tooth’s center, nerve and surrounding tissue must be removed. This is known as a root canal.
Early detection of tooth decay is the best method to prevent dental caries from turning into crowns, root canals, or tooth removal. Patients are provided various options to make their treatment procedure as pain free as possible. Nitrous Oxide and novocaine are a sample of these procedures.
