Selecting the Right Type of Floss

Taking care of the space between your teeth is important, especially if you want to avoid bacterial infections like gingivitis. Dental floss is equally important to your health as regularly brushing your teeth. Making this part of your daily routine is the best way to combat gum disease. Flossing is a way to get in the nooks and crannies that are otherwise inaccessible using only a brush. The crevices can be so small that there is no way to fish the food particles that are leftover out.
Flossing For Oral Health. Regular usage of floss can help keep your teeth free of food particles trapped between the enamel that may eventually cause plaque. The cleaning of food debris will keep your teeth protected against periodontal disease and bad breath as long as you regularly visit our office and follow all other oral health regimen steps. You should use dental floss every day for best results, and should worry more about your technique than how abrasive you are. In fact, going too hard may cause your gum tissue to become damaged.
There are different types of floss such as waxed and unwaxed. It might seem like a big decision but both of these floss types will clean the spaces between your teeth. If you have tightly compacted teeth or have not flossed in a while, waxed floss may do the trick. It will glide in easier between teeth and probably hurt less if you have not used floss in a while. It is more important to floss every day than to buy a “high-quality” floss (which don’t exist–all floss are usually created equal).
Our office can recommend a good floss for you if you are still confused about your options or want recommendations for how to choose a brand/flavor (some come in mint or cinnamon).
