Should I Use an Ergonomic Toothbrush?

Toothbrushing isn’t exactly an art, but there are some differences in the ways that people perform this practice. Some people don’t use the standard toothbrush anymore, preferring the ergonomic toothbrush that many claim to be more effective. This means that these toothbrushes are supposed to increase the efficiency with which you use the brush and clean your teeth. This might include a special brush head or handle.

Many of these toothbrushes claim that they have a stronger shape than the standard flat toothbrush with simple head. While you certainly might feel more comfortable having a grip on your toothbrush, it’s unclear to most people whether they should invest in toothbrushes that claim to “massage the gums simultaneously.”

Many of the benefits of ergonomic toothbrushes come from their lightness. They are easy to handle and do not feel like a heavy burden. Often the convex shapes can actually provide a tangible benefit because they can reach harder to reach areas and hit the lower teeth in the back of the mouth. Ergonomic toothbrushes, it seems, may be better suited for getting your back molars clean.

However, don’t assume that you can use an ergonomic toothbrush as a catch-all. Plenty of people use specialized toothbrushes but still suffer from oral conditions and health disorders because they are not using an appropriate technique, and many others use standard toothbrushes and are cavity-free!

If you have a good toothbrushing technique, the odds are that you will not see a huge increase in your efficiency. However, the ergonomic toothbrush is a good thing to buy for children who have low dexterity and may need some specialized tool to hold onto. They can also help if you have a smaller mouth and find yourself unable to get into hard to reach areas in the back or tops of your mouth and teeth.

The best way to keep your teeth clean is to brush your teeth twice a day, no matter what kind of toothbrush you are using. If you decide to switch over to an ergonomic toothbrush, make sure that you don’t get complacent. These toothbrushes are only effective if you also work hard!
