Two Alternatives to Traditional Braces

Traditional braces with brackets and wires have been around since the 19th century. They’re so common today that we almost think of them as a rite of passage for adolescents.

However, for adults and older teenagers, braces can be a bit embarrassing and cumbersome. That’s why dentists today offer multiple options for straightening teeth. Two of the most popular alternatives to traditional braces are porcelain veneers and Invisalign.

Veneers

A veneer is a thin, tooth-colored shell which is bonded onto the front of your natural tooth surface. Veneers can hide crooked teeth and gaps between teeth. The process of getting veneers only requires three trips to the dentist, the first for a consultation and the second two for fitting the veneers on your teeth.

Invisalign

You might’ve heard of Invisalign referred to as “invisible braces.” While that’s somewhat true, it’s also a bit misleading. Invisalign actually does away with all of the brackets and wires of traditional braces. Treatment involves a series of custom-made, clear aligners which are worn about 20-22 hours a day and taken off only during meal times or when brushing your teeth.

Invisalign has a number of advantages over traditional braces. First off, you can eat whatever you like, including all of your favorite sticky foods. Secondly, you don’t need to come into the office nearly as often since there’s no wire tightening involved with the Invisalign process. And lastly, Invisalign is entirely undetectable to friends and coworkers, allowing you to straighten your teeth without getting any awkward stares.
