Losing a tooth changes more than your smile. It changes how you chew, how you speak, and over time, the shape of your jaw. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that addresses all three. They are the closest thing to a natural tooth that modern dentistry can offer, and more Houston patients are choosing them each year.
Here is what you actually need to know before your consultation.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that a dentist surgically places into the jawbone where a missing tooth’s root used to sit. Over several months, the bone fuses to the post in a process called osseointegration. Once that bond is complete, a connector piece called an abutment is attached, and then a custom-made crown is placed on top.
The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. You brush it the same way, floss around it the same way, and bite with the same confidence.
Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or serve as anchors for a full arch of teeth. The system is flexible enough to address most tooth loss situations.
How Implants Differ From Bridges and Dentures
Bridges and partial dentures replace what is missing above the gumline. They do not address the root.
When a tooth root is gone, the jawbone beneath it no longer receives stimulation from chewing. The bone gradually resorbs, meaning it shrinks. Over years, that bone loss changes the shape of your face, particularly around the cheeks and lower jaw.
An implant mimics a tooth root. Because it is embedded in the bone, chewing pressure transfers through the implant into the jaw, preserving bone density the way a natural root would. Bridges and dentures cannot do this.
Bridges also require grinding down the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap to serve as anchors. That is a permanent alteration to teeth that were otherwise fine. An implant leaves neighboring teeth completely untouched.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most adults in good general health qualify. The main requirements are:
Sufficient bone density. Because the implant anchors into the jaw, there needs to be enough bone to hold it. Patients who have had missing teeth for years may have experienced some bone loss, but bone grafting can often restore enough volume to proceed. We assess this during the consultation.
Healthy gums. Active gum disease needs to be treated before implant placement. Implants placed in infected tissue have a significantly higher failure rate.
No uncontrolled systemic conditions. Uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune conditions can slow healing and affect osseointegration. Controlled diabetes, with a doctor’s clearance, is generally not a disqualifier.
Non-smokers, or patients willing to stop. Smoking dramatically increases implant failure rates by impairing blood flow to healing tissue. We discuss this honestly during consultations.
Age matters too. Implants are not placed in teenagers whose jaws are still developing. For adults, there is no upper age limit. Many of our most satisfied implant patients are in their 60s and 70s.
What Does the Timeline Look Like?
The process takes longer than a filling or a crown, but the steps are straightforward.
First, a consultation and imaging visit. We use advanced imaging and evaluation technology to assess your mouth and bone structure. This visit determines your candidacy and outlines your specific plan.
Second, implant placement. A minor surgical procedure, typically done under local anesthesia. Most patients report it is more comfortable than a tooth extraction.
Third, a healing period of three to six months for osseointegration. Most patients return to normal routines within a few days of the procedure itself.
Fourth, abutment and crown placement. Once healed, the connector and crown are attached. This visit is non-surgical.
The total timeline is typically four to eight months from start to finish, depending on whether any preparatory work is needed.
Cost and Financing
The honest answer: it varies. A single implant with crown typically ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 nationally, and prices in Houston are generally competitive with that range.
Insurance coverage for implants has improved significantly in recent years. Many plans now cover at least a portion of the restoration, even if they do not cover the implant post itself. Our team will review your benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises.
Greenspoint Dental offers financing through CareCredit and other providers that spread the cost into manageable monthly payments. A free consultation on implants is available. Call us to ask about current offers.
For patients with a missing tooth or anticipating an extraction: the sooner implant candidacy is evaluated, the more options are available. The longer a tooth root is absent, the more bone resorption occurs, which can make the procedure more complex later.
